England’s Lionesses: Roaring for the Win

The Lionesses – England’s Women National Team – undeniably are the favourites to win going into Sunday’s match. On home turf, the undefeated team is determined to sweep the competition. This represents the Lionesses’ first major final appearance since 2009 and third appearance in a European championship final.

The last time these two teams saw each other in a Euro Final was in 2009 when England suffered a 6-2 loss against Germany. New brilliant talent, a relentless style of play, and the entire country cheering them on will fuel the Lionesses’ to control their fate come Sunday.

Road to the Final: England’s semi-final performance in Sheffield was a masterclass of skill and dominance. The impact was instant when Mead’s header hit the back of the goal in the 34th minute. Nothing was going to stop Sarina Wiegman’s team from getting to the final. Ultimately, the four brilliant goals scored against Sweden allowed this fired-up team to bring it home.

Player to look out for: By naming the breakout stars on this team, we would just be naming the entire roster. Mead, Bronze, Kirby, Walsh, Stanway – everyone knows their part to play and executes it perfectly. One special baller who deserves her flowers? Mary Earps, the 25-year-old goalkeeper from Nottingham. With four clean sheets in five games and just one goal conceded in over 450 minutes of game play, her acrobatics in between the posts is bar none.

Germany’s Die Nationalelf: Looking to Make History

The German Women’s National Team – referred to as Die Nationalelf / The National Eleven – have reached their ninth Women’s Euro final out of eleven appearances. The record European champs with eight titles to their name won six consecutive championships from 1996 to 2013.

After a heartbreaking loss in the QF to Denmark in 2017 that broke that streak, coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg and her team won’t settle for anything less than victory. One thing is certain, no matter what happens on that pitch, history books are getting rewritten on Sunday.

Road to the Final: Up until the 44th minute of the semi-final against France, the German Women’s National Team had not conceded a goal throughout the entire tournament. Capitalizing on two phenomenal goals from Popp, the captain was able to cement her team’s place in the final. With high class and their ability to finish in crucial moments, it seems as though nothing can stop this dominant German side.

Player to look out for: Tied with England’s young star striker Beth Mead, Germany’s veteran captain Alexandra Popp has six goals to her name this tournament. By scoring in five consecutive Euro's matches, she equals Michel Platini’s 1984 record. Can anyone stop her? Only Sunday’s match will tell.
